About Obesity

Obesity

There are many well known problems associated with obesity. Chances are, if you are significantly overweight, you may already be experiencing some or many of these health problems. You might have medical problems like:

  • diabetes;
  • high blood pressure and heart disease;
  • sleep apnoea;
  • osteoarthritis;
  • and joint pain - particularly in weight-bearing joints, such as knees.

Other problems you might have experienced include difficulty losing weight after trying lots of different diets; difficulty exercising (maybe due to joint pain or restricted movement); discrimination and poor self-esteem and body image.

Calculate Your BMI

Morbid Obesity is defined as having a body mass index (BMI) greater than 40 or a BMI greater than 35 with major medical, physical or social problems. (As listed above.)

To calculate your BMI...

          Weight (kg)
Height (m) * Height (m)

 For example, if you weigh 120kg, and you are 170cm tall:

120 / (1.7*1.7)       BMI = 42

You can also use the online BMI calculator on the OSSANZ website, available via our links page.

Surgery has been proven to be a particularly effective method for achieving and sustaining a satisfactory level of weight loss for the Morbidly Obese. In our experience, many patients who are very overweight and have had difficulty losing weight by controlling diet and exercise can be very successful in losing weight following Adjustable Gastric Banding procedure.
